Final Blogfolio

  1.       Intro-video and paragraph

  • ·         For the intro-video and paragraph we were all instructed to video ourselves for 30 seconds and give a short story of ourselves. I talked about my family, hometown, and now where I am at in college. After we uploaded the video to our blog we wrote a short story about ourselves. This was a great exercise to use to get to know each other or to get to know the teacher. It also shows you how to upload videos and use technology a little more.

  • ·         The standard under NETS that goes best with this project is 3c. This standard is under model digital-age work and learning, and it states that it communicates relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats.

  • ·         The intro-video and paragraph is something I would use in my class for an ice breaker. I could use this when introducing myself to my class as well. This project is not something that I feel would help with learning though.

2.       Ghostery

  • ·         Ghostery was a program we downloaded so that we could see who was tracking certain websites on our computer. I found that facebook had several more trackers than twitter or pinterest. One thing that did stick out to me was that I even had some trackers when I got on google.

  • ·         The standard that I think best fits with ghostery is 4a. This standard is used to promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility. The specific standard states that it is used to advocate, model, and teach safe, legal, and ethical use of digital information and technology, including respect for copyright, intellectual property, and the appropriate documentation of sources.

  • ·         I probably would not use this in my classroom for my kids but I would use it for my own personal computer or for my computers at school that I use.

3.       Facebook

  • ·         For this exercise, we had to take a screen shot of our facebook page and upload it to blogger. After we did that we then had to answer the questions: What is this person known for? What does this person value? Is this person interested in the growth of other people? This is definitely a good exercise to use to see how creative students are and to see how they are presenting themselves to others.

  • ·         The standard under NETS that fits best for facebook would be 1c. This standard says that it is for facilitating and inspiring student learning and creativity. The specific standard is used to promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative processes.

  • ·         I actually do think I would use this in my classroom, especially if I was teaching high school students. I feel like this is a good way for students to evaluate themselves.

4.       Concept Map

  • ·         The concept map is definitely something that made me think. We chose a topic which mine was the American Government. I had to research all of my subtopics of American Government and everything that they consist of. I liked this project a lot because I actually learned stuff about American Government and then got to use my own creativity when presenting it to the class.

  • ·         The NETS standard that goes best with my concept map is 2a. This standard is for designing or adapting relevant learning experiences that incorporate digital tools and resources to promote student learning and creativity.

  • ·         I would definitely use this in my classroom one day. This was very helpful to me and helped me to learn a lot about my subject. It allowed me to be creative which I think students would love.
5.       Voki
  • ·         Voki was one of the creative projects we did. We created a whole animated talk show. I used a pumpkin, dressed it up, and changed its voice. I typed what I wanted my pumpkin to say which was about the kind of President I would want at USM. This project was very creative and a good tool to use for students.

  • ·         The standard that I think fits best with voki is 2c. This standard is used for customizing and personalizing learning activities to address students’ diverse learning styles, working strategies, and abilities using digital tools and resources.

  • ·         This is definitely something I will use in my classroom, especially since I want to teach kindergarteners. I think they will enjoy seeing an animated face talk rather than their teacher over again. It is a good tool to use to keep them interested.
6.       Webpage
  • ·         We were all asked to form a webpage as if we were teachers. This was really cool to me because it is something I will use in the future. We had a homepage, a calendar, course materials, and an about me page. This is something that I could see myself using in the classroom.

  • ·         The NETS standard that best fits the webpage is 3c. This standard is used to communicate relevant information and ideas effectively to students, parents, and peers using a variety of digital-age media and formats.

  • ·         The webpage is something that I will use as a teacher. I do not think I would use this for my students in the classroom. I will definitely set up a personal webpage for myself for my kids and parents to look at.
7.       Xtranormal
  • ·         Xtranormal was my favorite project in this class. It definitely showed my creativity and I could do anything I wanted to. For this project we were told to teach a life rule. I taught kids how to cross the street. This program allows you to decide the different camera views, chose the people in the video, and animates all of their movements.

  • ·         The standard that I feel goes best along with xtranormal is 4a. This one is to promote and model digital citizenship and responsibility. It says that I can use this to teach safe learning rules through digital information.

  • ·         This is definitely something that I would use in my classroom. I plan on teaching kindergarten so I could present any new learning lesson with this tool. I feel that it is creative and it would keep the kids interested when I am presenting a new topic.
8.       Movie Maker
  • ·         Movie maker was a program on our computer that allowed us to choose our own pictures and our own song and develop a movie out of it. I picked ten of my favorite pictures of my family, friends, and sorority and then animated them like a power point. After all of that I added in my favorite song so that it was more like a move.

  • ·         The movie maker program would be under 1c in the NETS standards. This standard is used to promote student reflection using collaborative tools to reveal and clarify students’ conceptual understanding and thinking, planning, and creative process.

  • ·         I think I would use this in my classroom for a fun end of the year project. I feel that it is something my students could use to reflect on their past year and also learn more about technology.

Problem and solution

My problem and my object are not very creative. But my problem was being overwhelmed and stressed and my object is my car. So in order for me to fix that problem using my object, I could use my car to drive me to the gym to workout to relieve some stress or I could drive my car to the beach to get away from everything which always relieves my stress, or I could just simply drive around listening to country music which always makes me feel better.

Ghostery and Collusion

After I downloaded collusion and ghostery, I found that people were tracking me through the internet. It was not so much people tracking me it was more of pages, such as google. It was strange to see that some websites I only had about 1 or 2 trackers but others there was up to 5 trackers. I definitely like these apps because I can see who is trying to track me and block them.

American Government Concept Map

American Government

  • Everything that our government does under these subtopics of American Government it to make our own government better. These six topics are all different and all concentrate on one specific aspect of our government. We have politics that are set in place so that no one tries killing each other, it is our governments mediator. Our government is so structured and organized that other countries are wanting to adopt our procedures.

I.       American Government and Politics

  • A.    Making our government better and easier to work

  • 1.    American legislation Process

  • 2.    American electoral Process

B.    Political Institutions and Processes

II.     Comparative Government

  • The comparative government allows people to study how other countries governments work. They then compare and contrast them to our own. This is a system that helps to better our government by seeing what other governments do better than our government. Some college courses that can be taken are politics of Great Britain, politics of Western Europe, and politics of Latin Government.

  • A.    Comparing our government to other governments

  • B.    Always trying to make our government better

III.    International Relations

  • The department of international relations allows our government to study other governments of different countries. This also helps to improve our government but it is more specific then comparative government. International relations focuses more how we can improve our relations with other countries by war and prosperity. A great college class to take to understand international relations better is US foreign policy.

  • A.    Studying the relationship of other countries

  • B.    War and Prosperity

IV.    Public Law

  • Public law is a little different form the other forms of government. Public law focuses on our legal processes and it always trying to figure out the legal ways of our government. Without public law our government would with no doubt fall apart. It keeps most of the citizens happy and keeps everything ran fairly.

  • A.    Focuses on our legal system

  • 1.    Constitutional Law

  • 2.    American Law

  • B.    How our legal ways work

V.     Public Administrations

  • Public administration is the ground work of how our government functions. People who work for the federal government are known as public administrators and it is very hard for any of these people to get fired. People who work under the public administration government are city workers, social security workers, DMV workers, etc.

  • A.    The nuts and bolts of American government

  • B.    Social security office, and recreational systems

VI.    Political Theory

  •         The philosophy of government

Snezana Markovic

This article is written my a Serbian computer science teacher, Snezana Markovic. Serbia's education policies do not allow online education for their students so Snezana came up with an effective online learning program for her students at her school. She was two first place awards for this creative online progrom in 2010 and then again in 2012. Her work has transformed learning for the teachers and the students at her school. She believed that the policies and rules that were in place did not take the students into consideration so that is why she began this online learning program. On her online learning program students were able to use any tool they wanted to so that they could study any topic needed. This gave students a chance to set a goal for themselves and helped them to be more hands on while learning. Markovic found that students were way more motivated to learn and this encouraged them to be successful.

Teachers' Expectations Can Influence How Students Perform

I find this article very interesting because it is not something I would have noticed until it was addressed. This article explains how teachers expectations influence the way they treat their students and also how it affects the way students perform. A Harvard professor, Robert Rosenthal, did a study on an elementary school from San Francisco. He renamed the normal IQ test so that the teachers nor the students knew what it was. After the students took this test he then selected, at random, a handful of students that were "over average" in their score. These students were not actually over average he just told the teachers that so that he could study the teachers behaviors. Rosenthal found that the teachers actions and expectations towards these selected students had changed and these kids actual became smarter. After this study was done Rosenthal met a guy from the University of Virginia, Robert Pianta, who was studying how to get teachers to change their expectation of kids. He found that the beliefs of teachers can be changed if they are trained to do so. Teachers would take a standard pedagogy course which trained them to teach differently. After they took this course Pianta would video their class and study how their teaching expectations changed.

Nine Ways the Common Core Will Change Classroom Practice

This article was written by William Schmidt, a University Professor of education at Michigan State University. He wrote this article to inform supporters of the good and bad news on common core standards. The good news was that a majority of teachers have read them and like them all but the bad news is that the majority of the mathematics is the same. The nine importand differences in the common core standards are: greater focus, coherence, skills, understanding, and application, emphasis on practices, more nonfiction, focus on evidence, "staircase" of text complexity, speaking and listening, and literacy in the content areas. I agree fully with this article I feel that it slows down learning and focuses more on one thing at a time so that the students can learn and comprehend the material better.

Out-of-school Settings Create Climate for New Skills

The big picture of this article is explaining the importance of learning inside the classroom and outside the classroom. It starts of by talking about the improvements of digital learning and the 21st century skills. It explains how students need a good balance between how and where they learn. This article also talks about the importance of connective learning. Connective learning tries to find how students learn best and in what environment. Out of school settings are just as important for students to learn as in class assignments. Creative programs are also a great way to grab students attention and get them interested in learning. It helps to get children more engaged in learning new ways rather than the original learning techniques. The article explains how teachers are learning games and using GPS to help them learn and be more engaged. I think that all these are great ways for students to get more involved in class and with learning.

KQED News

This article explains how California has recently adopted the new Common Core State Standards. It says that it grants teachers the right to be more flexible and creative when teaching their students.  Teachers are starting to see that with the use of media students are starting to get more involved and excited about learning. Basically, the CCSS shows a lot of emphasis on reading and understanding articles and also on digital fluency, but with the new technology we have now the teachers can get the students more involved. Teachers are now showing clips and 21st century media that relates to the students to get them more involved with learning. I think this new way of teaching is a great way for the students to learn. The CCSS is very important of course, but it is always good to have some visual information for the students to relate to.

New Technology Welcomes Students in Western Springs

This article is about the new advanced technology that has come about at John Laidlaw elementary school in Western Springs. Teachers here are trying to find new ways to get there students involved in the classroom. They have found that Google Chromebooks are a great way for their students to get excited about doing work and continue to learn at the same time. It states in the article that there are 30 Google Chromebooks in the fifth grade at Western Springs and the students are responding with eager motivation. A Chromebook is a type of laptop that has several google documents on it. It allows students and teachers to write and edit papers as well as quizzes or test. This seems to be an improvement in active learning for the classroom. I definitley see the Google Chromebooks as a positive learning tool for studnts. It also says in the article that there are over 200 ipads issued at Laidlaw elementary school for kids in kindergarten to second grade. I think that the advanced technology is great for classrooms but I do think that kindergarten, first, and second greade are way to young to be dealing with ipads or laptops.

Eight problems with Common Core Standards

In the article, "Eight problems with Common Core Standards" it states some of the conflicts teachers have with what they have to teach in the classroom. All teachers have to go by the "core" classes which are math, science, language arts, and social studies. After these four core classes are taught students have to take a state test on them. The article explains that the state test are completely irrelevant to the way teachers teach in their classrooms. The article also talks about whoever came up with the common core standards was not an experienced educator. I do think that the common core standards could be redone to help benefit the way a teachers teaches in the classroom and also the way a student learns.

Educators Evaluate Flipped Classrooms

This article on "flipping classrooms" has a lot of helpful information in it and I think that it goes good with the previous article, "As K-12 classrooms go high-tech, colleges get more virtual." This article explains a new technique known as a "flipped classroom." This new movement gives teachers the choice to send videos home with their students so that they can get the extra help they may need. I feel that this will be a huge success in many school districts, especially the underprivileged schools. A "flipped classroom" also gives the teachers and students more one-on-one and hands on time in the classroom.  Studies show that this has been a pretty successful movemet. Several schools all over the nation have already adopted this movement and they have had great successes. The article also explains a fairly new improvement to a "flipped classroom" and it is the mastery-based model of a "flipped classroom." For the mastery-based model, students are not required to watch the lecture videos at home; they are given an outline of the notes, videos, and worksheets that they might need for a test or quiz and then they are encouraged to watch the video for extra help. There are several negative and positive attitudes from teachers toward this new method, but I think as it is practiced more through schools it will definitely help improve education.

As K-12 classrooms go high-tech, colleges get more virtual

This article was published to explain how advanced technology has gotten in the lower education classrooms and how its starting to decrease in the college level classes. Lower elementary classrooms and high school classrooms have all upgraded their use of technology to teach their students. This article explains the postive and negative sides of having advanced technology in the schools. I think that the more ipads that are given to students still in middle school and high school will take away from the personal side of education. The use of advanced technology has grown so much that, it was stated in the article that more than 900 Cathedral High School students are required to buy ipads for the school year and if they could not afford them then there was scholarships being offered. One positive side to using this advanced technology is that the students are more educated on the new technology then teachers are and they can help when its needed. Also in the article it explains how colleges are moving away from the new technology. It states that in the future there will be more online classes for college students rather than students living four years on campus and taking all their classes in a classroom.

Introduction

Hi, my name is Julianne Nettles and I am from Ocean Springs, Ms. I have lived in Ocean Springs my whole life and I plan on moving back there after I graduate college. I have always dreamed of going to the University of Southern Mississippi and I am so glad that I go here now. My first year of college I cheered for the Southern Miss cheer leading team and I joined a sorority. I am majoring in elementary education and I am hoping to teach at an elementary school in Ocean Springs one day. Along with teaching I hope to also be a cheer leading coach one day.
